Tinpan Orange have teamed up with local producers to inject liveliness into some of their otherwise sombre gems. The Remix EP sees three tracks from the indie folkster’s fourth album release, Over The Sun (2012) being remixed by various producers.
First up is “Barcelona“. The original, which is introduced by Lubitz’ angelic humming has been transformed by Way Of The Eagle producer Jan Skubiszewski (The Cat Empire, John Butler Trio, Jackson Jackson) by injecting it with an uplifting beat and cheerful feel to the otherwise pretty flat, solemn tune. He does this by way of looping vocalist Emily Lubitz’ solemn chorus of “Slept On The Beach In Barcelona All By Myself”.
Lastly, “Tattoo On Her Wrist“, with its Fleetwood Mac-esque intro has been transformed by Spender into a virtually unrecognisable and dare I say, more interesting track.
The remixing of the tracks show you what the band would sound like if it were to produce mainstream music. However, Tinpan Orange, who features talented local artists that not enough people know of are best listened to in their slow, emotion-evoking style of folk. Despite putting additional energy and oomph into otherwise sombre yet enjoyable tracks, it’s best to listen to these guys in the comfort of their folksy style.
Review Score: 7.3 out of 10.
