Features/Event – Wild Fest 2013

Twenty-four rock and roll bands will be raising the roof over thirteen hours at The Brunswick Hotel this Saturday to raise money for Wildlife Victoria.

Headlined by Murder Rats and No Idea, the mini fest will feature local acts as well as interstate visitors spread across two stages.

The event was organised by Rev Altman who has been volunteering with the organisation for nine months. She has undertaken over fifty rescues and volunteers as a transporter for the organisation. Chuck, who will be performing with his band Spew N Guts, assisted in the organisation of the event.

Wildlife Victoria is a not-for-profit animal rescue organisation that runs as a volunteer based charity specialising in providing an emergency phone line service to members of the community. If a member of the public has sighted any type of Australian wildlife that is sick, injured or orphaned, they can call the helpline and speak to an operator who will assist them over the phone or send out a rescuer to take care of the situation. Funding comes from donations, as there is no government funding for the organisation.

Altman’s involvement within the organisation is that of a rescuer/transporter. In an interview with me via email, Altman explained her role as, “The person who goes out [to an animal rescue] when a member of the public calls in about a sick, injured or orphaned wildlife.”

“I rescue or asses the animal, they [the animals] do not always need to be rescued, and I transport them to a vet or shelter”. She continued.

The idea to bring the two together – music and animals – came from Altman’s passion for helping animals that can’t help themselves and doing what she’s good at, in her own words, ‘putting on rock and roll shows.’

The event kicks off at midday through to after 1am. Entry is free. Ten per cent of the earnings from the bar will also be donated towards the charity.
